BACKGROUND
The Westminster Police Department applied for and was awarded a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). The purpose of the grant is to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in crashes involving alcohol and other primary collision factors and to utilize best practice strategies. The funded strategies include DUI checkpoints, DUI saturation patrols, stakeouts, operations, educational presentations and training. The program may also concentrate on speed, distracted driving, seat belt enforcement, operations at intersections with disproportionate numbers of traffic crashes, and special enforcement operations encouraging motorcycle safety. These strategies are designed to earn media attention thus enhancing the overall deterrent effect.
The total grant awarded to the Westminster Police Department is $105,000 with a program period of October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025.
