BACKGROUND

On April 23, 2013 the City Council adopted Resolution No. 4337, re-establishing the Commission on Aging. During the meeting on November 12, 2022, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 2598, adding Chapter 2.62 to the Westminster Municipal Code, superseding Resolution No. 4337.

Since its creation, however, the Commission on Aging noticed a meeting for February 28, 2022, and was cancelled due to lack of quorum. Staff had taken an item to the City Council during the January 25, 2023, meeting for Council to consider the disbanding/dissolving of the Commission and a unanimous vote was moved to continue the commission and gave staff direction to continue with recruitment and outreach.

Additionally, staff took an item to the City Council on September 27, 2023 to consider the disbanding/dissolving due to there being no interest from the community to serve on the Commission. Rather than disbanding the Commission, the City Council voted to amend the age requirements for the Commission from 62 years of age to 55 years of age (Ordinance No. 2608).

After this requirement amendment, the City Clerk’s Office worked closely with the Community Services Department to promote recruitment and interest to serve. At this time, there has been no applications received for this Commission.

The duties of the Commission on Aging are similar to those of the Parks & Recreation Commission.  The Parks & Recreation Commission has assumed responsibility for those tasks when necessary and will continue to do so, ensuring that they remain a high priority and focus for the community.

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no fiscal impact associated with this item.
