BACKGROUND

The second quarter of 2025 saw a nearly 21% overall decrease in crime compared to the same period in 2024. Violent crime dropped by approximately 25%. However, there was an increase in reported rape cases. This rise is largely attributed to the adoption of the new crime data collection system, N.I.B.R.S. (National Incident-Based Reporting System). Under this system, a single incident involving multiple offenses is now recorded as multiple crime statistics, whereas in the past, it would have been counted as just one.

Property crimes also declined significantly, with a reduction of more than 20%. The only exception was arson, which increased by 75%. Similar to the changes in violent crime reporting, this rise is influenced by the new reporting standards-multiple charges from a single case are now recorded individually. Additionally, car fires are now included under arson in the updated system, contributing to the increase.
