BACKGROUND

This item was requested by Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen. Mayor Nguyen is proposing to initiate a Holiday Home Decorating Contest for Westminster residents. A similar program was previously offered by the City and was well-received by the community. However, it was discontinued several years ago due to budget constraints and staff reductions. Given the current focus on community engagement and neighborhood pride, it may now be an appropriate time to reconsider reinstating this program.

The intent of programs such as these is to celebrate the holiday season by encouraging residents to decorate their homes, fostering community spirit, and enhancing the beauty of Westminster’s neighborhoods during the winter months.  Several other cities offer similar successful programs.

FISCAL IMPACT

The fiscal impact of the program would vary depending on the scale of the contest, the number of participants and the type of recognition provided (e.g., prizes, signage). Staff time to plan, coordinate, and manage the contest could be absorbed within existing department resources.
